A Black Shirt is a term that applies to those people who have a sense of humor. In general, it’s a term applied to many different characters – from the “carnival barker” type, to the “pull your finger and get it done” type, to the “been there and done that” type. However, with respect to the current political climate in America, you would do well to steer clear of the Black Shirt category if you don’t want to end up on the receiving end of some online haymakers.
One of the reasons why Black Shirt seems to be a highly overused and misunderstood term is because the people wearing them – who are often called the BShirts (or BSHers) – are not usually what they seem. In fact, most people will think they are members of the Ku Klux Klan. These folks tend to be rather shy and introverted, and they tend to always have their favorite brands of beer, and their favorite political causes.
All Blacks in Black Shirt outfits tend to be underrepresented in real life. There is a reason why the Ku Klux Klan tends to have their more active members at rallies – because they are the ones with the most intense attention towards the political issues. There are plenty of non-Klan people, however, who happen to be wearing Black Shirts, and tend to blend into the crowd quite nicely. They tend to make a good impression, and often attract positive attention from others.
Contrary to popular belief, the term was not first coined by the Ku Klux Klan and does not have any kind of original claim to it. It actually originated from the traditional English sport of shinning, and the fact that a “shilling” referred to the kind of military uniforms commonly worn by the British forces, and not necessarily to any particular form of currency. It therefore has nothing to do with the actual British currency.
Black Shirt supporters are largely dedicated to their cause, and they are also extremely shy. This might explain the similarity between a Black Shirt in a rally, and the shy character in Sherlock Holmes who are all business, and everything in his world revolve around one case. The greatest minds in politics have claimed that the only difference between a Black Shirt and a terrorist is that the former is more efficient.
A group of folks known as Black Pants for Bernie were arrested for taking off their shirts during a rally of the United States’ Democratic political candidate, Senator Bernie Sanders. Later, the local news came out with the headline that a few of the protestors had been wearing Black Shirts, when in fact it was the other way around. Nevertheless, these folks did make a statement, and the media picked up on it, and then further controversy followed.
Of course, one could argue that the protestors were acting irresponsibly, since it was an election rally. If you listen to the pundit class, it was really quite interesting to watch, because they all seemed to be holding their collective breath while Bernie was speaking. However, to the people who were observing and reacting, it wasn’t that difficult to see that the Black Shirts were simply expressing their opinions that they couldn’t get anywhere else.
Whether or not a person wants to believe it, the Black Shirt can sometimes be extremely annoying. Still, they are rarely able to actually do anything physical, and they’re easily turned against, when they put on their Black Shirts and storm the halls of the White House. They tend to represent what is left of the right wing – the group that believe in making war without a proper plan, but since they are in hiding, many people tend to ignore them, and regard them as trash.
